depends how you define "high performance."

As a general rule of thumb, you have to spend $200 for the graphics card alone, which nowadays would be an nvidia 7800 or better.

Monitors have recently both skyrocketted and plummeted. a gaming LCD monitor (viewsonic and viewsonic only) will run you over 300 easily. conversely, a CRT monitor is far better for gaming and the best one available today (the viewsonic ultrabrites) will only cost 80-110.

Hard drives can be very expensive or very cheap, depending again on how you define "high performance." As a rule of thumb, the minimum would be a 20GB, 7200 RPM hd for around 60-80 bucks. But, it is far too small for certain things, e.g. being a server. The larger the storage, the faster the rpms need to be, and the smaller the storage the lower the rpms need to be. in general, don't get a 5400rpm hd.

motherboards and processors run the gamut. buy the best you can afford, and don't be fooled by cpu's that merely have a doubled clock time. there is good information at www.tomshardware.com for figuring out what you need and what you can afford.

memory is key. you need the fastest memory you can buy in the largest units you can afford (smaller numbers are better for ms measurements.)

Imho, depending on what you need as "high performance," you can easily put one together for 400-600, if you are willing to make some sacrifices (smaller monitor and hd, less memory.)

currently, the best "out of the box" for gaming and applications would be an hp.
