Depends how competent you are. If you're not so hot, get a cheap one with a small amp. Try out the guitars in the shop before hand to get an idea - how else are you gonna know what you feel comfortable with?

The Fender P-bass is an excellant, proven bass guitar, but I Don't see you getting too much of a complete setup for $300. Check out the used guitars for sale ads in the local newspapers, I've heard of getting good deals at pawn shops too, but make sure you try them before laying out any money.

go too ebay and research stuff.. carvin and fender are good line`s of bass guiters..rock on dude
