Ital Cristoforo Colombo, Span Cristóbal Colón (1451–1506) European discoverer of the New World, born in Genoa, NW Italy. He went to sea at 14, was shipwrecked off Portugal, and settled there c.1470. His plans to reach India by sailing W were rejected by John II of Portugal, but finally supported by Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain. He set sail from Saltes (3 Aug 1492) in the Santa Maria, with 50 men, and attended by the Pinta and the Niña. He reached the Bahamas (12 Oct), then visited Cuba and Hispaniola (Haiti), where he left a small colony. He returned (15 Mar 1493) to be received with the highest honours by the court. His second voyage (1493–6) led to the discovery of several Caribbean islands. On his third voyage (1498–1500) he discovered the South American mainland, but after a revolt against his command, he was sent home in irons by a newly appointed royal governor. Restored to favour in Spain, he went on his last great voyage (1502–4) along the S side of the Gulf of Mexico. He died at Valladolid, in Spain, but in 1536 his remains and those of his son Diego were removed to Santo Domingo, in Hispaniola. They were returned to Spain in 1899, and interred in Seville Cathedral. In 2004 forensic tests were ongoing in an attempt to establish whether the remains were genuine.

Stale bread, dried beef, fetid water, cramped and disease ridden living quarters aboard ship.
On his first voyage he stopped off for supplies in the Canary Islands and then it took him about five weeks to get to North America. The crew frequently threatened to mutiny and go back towards Spain. The first island he landed on had three indigenous groups of friendly "Indians." He supposedly named the island "San Salvador," but now no one knows which island it was. He then explored what are now Cuba and Hispaniola, where he made friends with the native chief, who allowed him to leave 39 men behind in a settlement he called La Navidad.
Although so far his dealings with Indians were friendly, he managed to bring back some captives, which he ultimately presented to the Spanish crown on his return, along with gold, tobacco (first time it was seen in Europe), pineapples, turkeys and a hammock. Although he didn't bring back the East India spices they were expecting, he introduced the chili pepper to Spain for the first time.

a good book to read is called "the people's history of the united states" by howard zinn.
it talks about columbus and his voyage about how he thought he had hit india....which how we came about calling native americans indians.
he wasn't a very kind man and enslaved many indigenious people. he wasn't able to find the treasures he was hoping for and instead implemented slavery as a treasure to bring back to spain. really sad stories to read about. check it out sometime from your local library.

He blew it.
No one really trusted him. Even though Queen Isabella gave him the money to begin his voyages, the only crew they could get to go with him were convicts.
He left a segment of these untrustworthy convicts behind while he returned to report. What was he thinking?
He eventually died penniless.
Keep in mind that I tend to wax pessimistic.

Despite the garbage that is thrown around about these men who are not here to answer or defend themselves, he was inspired by God to make this type of trip!
Just as well for God and America and the other countries that he did!
What an inspiration!!!
