Oxford is the oldest university per se in the country, however it is technically a collegiate. The first universities which were planned as such were the so called 'Red Bricks', the oldest one of those is University of Liverpool, in fact the term 'red brick' was coined by the Unversity of Liverpool due to the original university buildings, the Victoria Buildings, being made of red bricks in stark contrast to the other buildings which surrounded them.

Oxford, not Cambridge. Apparently, Some students and teachers didn't like the way Oxford University was being run, and founded Cambridge University. Don't take my word for it, I was just told this.
