The instructions said to start the test 14 days after 1st day of menses. My cycles are not always the EXACT same length (28 to 30 days) so I thought I would be safer to take the test 2 days earlier.

Sure enough 2 lines appeared however one was VERY slightly fainter then the other but not by much, BUT the test said to read the results after 3 minutes,,, nothing showed up in the 3 minutes the second line showed up after about 10 minutes (we had intercourse just in case)... yesterdays test No line showed up at all. So, have I really not ovulated yet (ws the first test accurrate) OR did I miss it altogether was my result the END of it ??

I will keep testing until this week but I really hope that we haven't missed it ... we really are hoping for an August baby!

We will not stop trying if we don't have an August baby - but there are a couple of reasons we would like and august baby - it will work out VERY well with my career AND august is a sentimental month to us... (long story).

Those ovulation predictors never worked for me. For some people, it doesn't accurately measure the horomone surge that happens right before you ovulate, so like you said, taking it earlier is better than too late.
To get pregnant I ended up switching to a higher end fertility monitor, one that digitally monitors your estrogen level and your horomone surge. It was pricey (like $150), but worth it. I also took my temperature and charted it...when it shoots up all of a sudden it means you definitely ovulated, whereas those predictors can't tell you for sure if you did or not. It was worth it for us, and gave us a lot of peace of mind. Best of luck!

I don't think you have ovulated yet. OPK test sticks have to be dark to indicate a LH surge, so you haven't really had a true posative until the line is quite noticable, but it is coming soon so the sex you had may get you pregnant, but keep having more and keep testing for the next couple of days. good luck

A faint line is STILL a line.

Just out of curiosty: why is an August baby so important?

yes. after getting off the pill, my cycles were irregular for 15 months, i was temping/charting and using OPKs.. there were a few months when i got + OPKs but never actually ovulated according to me temperatures.. your body can gear up to ovulate, release the hormones but then not actually produce. happens sometimes.
