Usually, 2 is enough. It's not worth the hassle of having to carry extra luggage for a lot of fancy clothing. Plus, you don't want to worry about loosing things or ruining them in the salt air. And your dry cleaning bill won't get sky-high after the trip.
Even if you have more than one formal event or dinner, no body will care if you have to repeat a dress. They don't expect you to have a closet full of things to chose from. And many women will only bring one formal outfit, and wear it multiple times. Have plenty of casual clothing, a bathing suit or two, and comfy shoes. Your cruise revolves more around the day than the night, and there are plenty of options of what to do, and where you choose to eat. You don't have to have every dinner in the formal dining room.

There will be all sorts of activities on the ship but from my knowledge, you need to dress up for the formal dinning room and maybe the captain hosts a cocktail party or two. Bring at least 2 dresses but add some formal black trousers and some snazzy tops and jewelry that you can mix and match. That way, you will be prepared to participate in all the activities you want and not feel underdressed if these ocassions call for more formal or upscale attire.
For day wear, keep it relaxed and fresh. Keep in mind the Ports of Call that you will be likely to visit. Better yet, ask for an itinerary so you will have an even better idea of what you need or want to pack.
I have only been on chartered cruises and yet I took quite a variety of outfits with me because I just never knew which way the ball would bounce and that way I was always ready for what ever came my way that I fancied.
Enjoy.

It depends on the cruise line. A lot of ships are more youth-oriented and offer flexibility with "dress-down" nights. All cruise ships usually have at least one formal dress night though. Since the cruise company tells you that two will be sufficient, I'd pack two gowns, and one simple little black dress -- you can do anything with one of those, and changing your accessories will make it look like a different dress. Just be sure to pack inexpensive (but not cheap-looking) costume jewelry, maybe a silk scarf, etc. to dress it up. Have fun!

One formal dress is enough - takes alot of room in the suitcase. The other formal night is only done if you are going on a long 10 day cruise. I wore the same dress twice and got transferred to another dinner time that day. Save money by practicing your hairdo in advance. Or if you go to the spa for a hairdo, don't buy the jeweled barrettes there, they are really expensive.

Yeah, if they said 1-2 that should be plenty. I've been on 2 weeklong cruises, and there's only one or two formal dinners, so you don't need any more. Just pack some other nice clothes! Have fun on your cruise.

You will probably only really need one really formal dress, for the night when dinner dress is formal. If you don't want to bring two formal dresses, you can always bring a casual dress and "fancy it up" with you accessories.

That is for the dinner with the Captain. I wore a summer dress for that night and paired it with simple sandles that had small heels. I was so burned from the beach my skin could barely stand a formal dress. Keep it simple... like a black dress would do.

Bring 3, i`m sure it will be enough, you don't know what can happen, remember dresses doesn`t fit the same every day, or a color won`t look perfectly to you that day, remember you probably be tan.

i went on a cruise and i brought one dress that is all you need. there is only one formal night and the rest are casual. i just brought a lot of skirts and nice capris such as gauchos. you don't need to go spend thousands of dollars on gowns that is ridicilous. i saw a couple of ppl on my cruise who were wearing like Versace gowns and they look so stupid. all you need to do is look nice and together. you don't need to look like you are going to the queens ball!
