On the audio tape made available on militant Web sites, the al-Qaida in Iraq leader also welcomed the Republican electoral defeat that led to the departure of Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld. He added that the group's fighters would not rest until they had blown up the White House.

I don't think that is a threat.

I believe it's a PROMISE!

Truth be told, I know what I'm about to say sounds very much like some kind of justification for the Democrats still, and maybe it is (I'm not sure). But from what I've seen thus far, the terrorists are very intelligent. If they believed in what they said, they would never have put that out for Americans to hear, because it might end up with Rumsfeld back in (and if they want him gone as they said, they wouldn't be trying to bring him back in with taunting). If they felt Rumsfeld and the Republicans were a danger to them that strongly, they'd keep their mouth shut and count their blessings Rummy's gone.

Which assuming this is true, they either want what the Republicans are doing in fighting in Iraq (meaning it helps their cause in some way we don't see), or that the White House and the terrorists are working together (the conspiracy theories, I consider them far-fetched--as most Americans do--but who knows, maybe there is something to it). I pan the second possibility right away, it is too far out there. But the first possibility, that it helps them in some way (albeit unintentionally on the part of the Bush administration) and that we simply don't understand how yet; I think that is what is happening here. I still believe the Democrats way is the better way, and this confirms it for me; but I could see how many would disagree with that assessment.
