why is a fur seal called a fur seal when it looks more like a sealion and looks less like a seal?

The fur seal earned its name by the thick pelage it has. It has a thick fur like coat and in the days when people were naming things based on physical characteristics it was named. Now we know that it is more closely related to the sealions than seals, but the name had been used so long and was so accepted, it was pointless to change it and confuse everyone and everything.
