I fell down the other day playing basketball and used my hand to break my fall(bad idea). I am in a temp. splint put on by hospital and will see an ortho guy next week. The doc at hospital said i fractured my distal radius. Any idea how long I will have to keep it immobilized?

Thanks a bunch

Well, I did the same thing many years ago as a child, and I had to have a cast on for six weeks. I think it also depends on the kind of break it is, whether it's a clean break, a jagged break, etc, and of course your age will play a major part in the healing process. The dr. will look at your x-rays and determine all of these factors. You can't really know until that time. Good luck to you! Be careful, and keep on keeping on.... :-)

depends on your age. The distal par of the radius is closer to you hand and farther away from the body so It will take longer to heal. Probably about 6-8 weeks, maybe longer. Probably you wil need physical therapy after the cast comes off from the muscle atrophy or shrinkage.

I don't understand why it will take a week yet for you to see the ortho guy. Normally that bone needs to be set immediately, specially if it is displaced. You will be in plaster for at least 6-8 weeks.

to sum it up you broke your wrist...... the distal side is the bone on the forearm closest to you thumb. depending on the severity immoblized anywhere from 3-6 weeks is normal
