the most likely cause is you have too many programs running at one time. You may have spyware/adware that is running and sucking up all your pc's resources. If you hit CTRL+ALT+DELETE one time and access the "task manager" you can see all the programs that are running. Normally, there should be around 20 critical processes that your pc needs to function. If you have way more than that, you need to clean out your computer.
The most effective way to rid of all the nonsense, is to completely wipe out and reload your operating system and hard drive. If you don't know how to do this, it might not be an option, but that is the absolute best way to get your computer running smoothly again. There is just too much trash out there that automatically installs on your computer and bogs it down.
You can also try disabling all startup items. It may help, but some programs will automatically re-enable themselves, thus, it will only work the first time you restart your system. But to do this, follow the directions below:
1. Click on the Start Menu
2. Click on RUN
3. Type: "msconfig" in the box and press ENTER
4. Click on the STARTUP tab in the top right corner
5. Click "Disable All" to prevent all programs from starting up
This only prevents the programs from starting up when you turn on your computer. It does not delete anything. Any critical programs that windows needs to function properly are not in that list, so you don't have to worry about disabling something critical.
Hope this helps.

check the right side of the task bar. click on the arrow to extend the bar and see everything that is there. usually, you have tons of crap in there that you don't need that slows down your computer. the difference between the left side and the right side is that on the left, those are only shortcuts. the program itself is not running if you have an icon there (unless you are using win 98, which does run a minimized version of the program in the quicklaunch bar, and removing those icons will speed up your computer.) the right side, however, all those programs are running and sometimes not in minimized or background forms.
To clear stuff out of the taskbar, right click on the icon and go to properties or "run program." Find the options within the program and click off anything that says "start on boot" or "leave in taskbar."
The most notorious programs here are quicktime (which you don't need running all the time, the video or sound file will open it automatically,) real player (which just sucks, the windows media player in xp is much better) and virus scan software (in the taskbar, it will scan every goddam click. turn it off and set it run only on user request, when you have time to do a full system scan or after an update is available.)

If you are running windows XP it could be a RAM problem. Most pc's from Compaq and other vendors generally only put 256mb or RAM in their computers to start with which was fine for running windows 98 but these days you want a minimum of 512mb to run xp and other programs at a reasonable speed.

There are such programmes available that can copy a hard drive .ONE CARE is one that I subsribe to, and use it to create a backup and system recovery disc, this can be down loaded from Microsoft over the net and is updated daily for a year or as long as you subscribe.(See their site) Another good method is to purchase an external drive and upload the programme contents of your present drive onto it... once verified that you do indeed have a copy of your stuff on the new drive, go back to the old drive and reinstall windows from the backup help dept, then once everything is back on track move forward from there by choosing the programmes awaiting on the external drive that you wish to be reinstated back onto the original drive. Dump or keep the rest it is up to you,I WOULD KEEP IT JUST IN CASE THERE WAS SOMETHING i HAD OVERLOOKED. then create a recovery disc for windows. One-care is a good programme to create this. as it can deal with system copies, programme backup and malware plus viral removal in realtime as it emerges. good luck.

Your computer could have been infected with spyware. Try doing a search for spybot s&d on the internet. Install the program for free and see it that helps. You may also try defragmenting your hard drive. Do a search for defrag through the "help" option when you click on start.

I'm not sure if you have this feature on your computer, but you may want to defragment your harddrive, that usually clears up space. Also try to remove or uninstall any programs that you don't normally use. You may also want to run your virus check just to make sure you don't have one.

Check for adware and spyware with Spybot search and destroy. You could add more RAM or replace the processor with a faster one. Maybe defragment the hard drive.

you can upgrade your memory. You can stop certain unecessary background services/apps from starting up when you boot your PC. You can run a defrag on your disk as well.
