yeah javascript was created by netscape they made the lagauage for there borwsers now microsoft has it own version called Jscript same thing just runs with windows and allows for activex controls which are scary if you are a security person. There is also Vbscript whcih is even worst then Jscript which is another great prodcut from microsoft. But its a client side language for script without haveing to visit the server its not compiled so it just runs as a script

What the first guy said but add "One major use of web-based JavaScript is ... to perform tasks not possible in HTML alone." It is a programming language and it is run as a script instead of being compiled before hand.
