FMLA only protects your job. Short term disability and maternity leave may pay you for your absence, but FMLA is what will guarantee your job (or an equivalent job) is waiting when you return. You can and should put in for short term disability, however, your FMLA should run concurrently with it. Check with your HR department.
Another thing to check with your HR department is the timing. Government regulations state that you get 12 weeks of FMLA "per year." Each company gets to choose if that means per calendar year, or on a rolling 12-month basis. However, this needs to be in writing as part of the employee handbook. If your company's policy is to use the calendar year, you would have 12 weeks this year (2006) and 12 weeks next year (2007) (although you would actually only be able to use 6 weeks or so for this year, since that's all the time that's left).
Again, talk to your HR department. They should know all the rules and company policies. Good luck with the pregnancy!

It depends, if a company does not carry short term disability (which they DO NOT have to) regardless of bedrest, you are only entitled to 12 weeks of leave under the FMLA, whether it's before or after you have the baby. If your employer is decent, they will give you more time and still save your job, but they have NO legal reasons to. Sorry! I went through this with my first child because I was put on bed rest about the same and I only had 1-2 weeks left after I had my daughter and she was c-section which was mandatory 6 weeks off. They let me go! I contacted a lawyer and he explained it all, and there was nothing I could do. Good Luck!

Yes, you are covered under FMLA and short term disability if you have it through your employer. Your HR office should have all the paperwork you need. Just get it and have your doctor fill it out. FMLA will cover 12 weeks and any time after that you should be able to get a leave of absence for.
I used up all my FMLA in the beginning of my pregnancy because of major complications. I am able to cover my 6 weeks by putting in for a leave of absence. I also was able to collect short term disability in the beginning and again for postpartum.

I would think so... call your local Workforce Commission they should be able to answer this questions and tell you what you need to do.

Yes. You'll have to contact your employer or your state, and get paperwork from your doctor. But as far as i know it applies.
