Wayne... I hate to burst your bubble, but robots can already learn independently... That is what A.I. is... and it is advancing at an mazing rate. And no they will never be "Alive",just because they can "think".
Robots may learn to comprehend things, do tasks, mimick humans, etc... But they are built by specs in a shop. There may come a time where they will understand emotion, (they can alread recognize different emotions), but they will never truly have emotions. I, for one, am glad about that because machines, (robots), are more durable, and stronger... Would you want a pissed off robot?
Right now most robots are focused in one field for the most part, (lifting things we couldn't, prosessing information like Big Blue, there is even a robot that can talk using air pumps and synthetic vocal cords. The list is extensive...).
For humanoid styles, there are two options for mobility.
1)Wheels, which have a better battery life, but lack in mobility.
2)Legs, which have better mobility, but the battery life is very short.
Scientist are working on a way for robots to walk, and cut down on the batteries using "elastic refleces", but are now faced with a stability problem... never the less they are fine tuning the problems, and once humaniod robots become "mainstream", there will be two options you should be able to go with...
1) The robot learns everything from the ground up. Down side, it takes trial and error, but will "learn" how you like it done.
2) You would be able to buy programs, so it could do preset things. Down side is that would be the way it is done, unless you pay for specialized programs. The good thing is, it gets it right the first time.
I know I went into this a little deep, but I hope you enjoy the information.

I don't think it has been shown that thoughts are electrical impulses. I know that brain to muscle signals are electrical and nerve to brain signals are as well but does science know for a fact that thinking is electrical? And if it is then there are still way more differences in humans and robots than similarities. Putting aside the fact that robots can't do anything even remotely dexterous like tie a shoe, they can't learn and they can't think either. Artificial intelligence is in the dark ages. Also, robots are created. Apparently, we evolved out of primordial goo with no creator.

Uh,neurons mostly. It's more thn electrical impulses. Plus it's another type of "electricity". Then another key word of impulses. Robots don't have free will. While nanobots can help one calculate and such, the human element doesn't go away. Robots are media, they need some sort of function nessecary to humans, and humans to supply hydrolics, circuits, and the ultimate material, i.e. text There are a bunch of philosophical and scientific differences that one must show the robot exists. Kind of a cycle of "windows" to each other.

Your point of comparison is too small to arrive at correct response. Lightning is also a giant electrical impulse, similar in some way to both the robot and the human, yet you would not ask "if humans brains transmit electrical impulses is a cloud alive." :)
By adding more points of comparison you could make a stronger arguement.

Thoughts, while electrical in nature, are not electrical impulses. They are neuronic impulses. The difference being the minute amount electrical energy that arises is the result of a molecular exchange of chemicals among neurons. It is the chemical exchanges that represent the thoughts.
In a robot, programming is transmitted by switches being open and closed. As of yet not much is altered in the actual flow of energy through those switches. Therefore no "thought" algorithm is transmitted.

The brains are just like a perfect computer, but who is the person manipulating it?
The eyes are like perfect cameras, but who is seeing?
Robots don't think and never will!
Humans, envious of God,are always trying to imitate God,who can create billions of universes adn living entities in a sec.
Humans cannot create anything, not even a baby...who comes to this world,by the will of God.The parents are only recipients of the soul required to form the baby, and is given by the father's semen, and the mother's ovule. As soon as this happens, another being is created within 9months

Robots will one day become sentient, and capable of thought. We can then debate about other differences, such as whether or not humans will always have better personalities, but this question is really about capacity for thought. There is no fundmental reason why robots cannot possess autonomous sentinence.

The electrical impulses are only part of our being. Our mind is the part that a robot lacks. The brain is the physical storehouse of knowledge, the mind is the rational part of our being.

thoughts aren't just impulses, and humans aren't robots.
robots aren't capable of independent thought, which is why all the money wasted on studying "artificial intelligence" over the years has basically gone into the sewer. Robots will never be capable of independent thought, becuase then they would be alive. And only God can create life, not man. (God allows man (and other creatures) to reproduce, but that is only passing on life, not creating it. Only He has that power, and only He ever will)
They can only do what they are told to do (programmed).
Humans have souls, created by God. Men are created in God's image (so we have souls, personality, creativity, we can self-reflect, and can think abstractly, which is something no other [physical] creature in the universe can do (I say physical because spirits can do all of the above, but are not made in God's image the way we are - they have all of the above attributes, but none of the other created earth animals do.
By the way, thoughts are not just electrical impulses. That may be their physical representation, but they also contain information, something that can't happen without an intelligence originating it, just as no living creature could have happened by chance, but must have been specially created.
A computer didn't create itself and neither did any living creature.
We were all designed and created by an infinitely powerful intelligent creator, God.

Humans have souls. Thoughts aren't just electrical impulses. You've got to think holistically. Be a robot if you want.
