NO GIFT CERTIFICATES, they are so impersonal and don't take any thought at all. How about a day shopping, at the spa, or lunch or even a little overnight excursion with YOU!!! I am 54 and would love to spend some quality time with my 30 year old and 28 year old but, time, children, jobs get in the way. Most Mom's just want time with their kids.

Spa certificates to her favorite retreat, or perhaps a Merino Wool sweater for Banana Republic (my Mom always likes those.) If all else fails, get her a gift certificate to her favorite store. While it is not the most exciting gift, at least she will find use for it.

Do a search on the Internet for unique gifts you are bond to find something. That is what I did for all my gifts this year. One that I really want to do (maybe next year for my mom is a quilt with a bunch of pictures on it of me and my sister as we grew up. I really want to try and make it so it will be even more special, but you can buy them as well. This is something that is useful and very sentimental.

how about a family portrait ? this would be a gift which would bring memories years from now. also might start a Christmas tradition of a family portrait. there was a lady 85 years old who had her portrait with Santa every year of her life and these were her most treasured possessions.

Make her something. She will appreciate the time and effort you have spent on her far more than the money.
My mother-in-law is now in her eighties. I collect soaps and shower caps from hotels I stay in, and give her pots of home made jam. She appreciates the fact that I have thought of her.

Last year we blindfolded my mom's eyes, took her in the car and when we arrived at the Spa her best childhoodfriend was waiting for her and they had a wonderful day...
