From a pragmatic perspective we lose nothing by believing this to be possibly true (providing we don't try something really silly like jumping off the Empire State Building expecting to fly) but if we disbelieve it then we have lost the possibility that the statement might be true by creating a self-fulfilling prophecy in our minds.

Reality is much 'bigger' than what we perceive through our limited senses -especially after being further filtered by our personal and collective experiences, prejudices and fears.

I believe you can expand your 'personal reality' by bringing it closer to the true reality of the universe. This usually involves increasing your perception, searching for truth and letting go of prejudices and assumptions.

I believe we can alter the universe around us in ways that might appear 'magical' given that our view of the universe is very limited and based again on our limited ability to percieve. For example our unaided eyes can only see certain wavelengths of light, can only see down to a certain size. These limitations have contributed to how humanity has viewed the world. Now consider if your eyes had the power of an electron microscope, and you could also view all the energy waves and particles flying between us, through us and connecting us -would our view of each other be different? What would our world view be?

Any greater understanding of this 'ultimate reality' might allow people to do things that seemed to defy 'accepted reality' but would actually just be 'true reality.'

I think it is possible. It just takes a long process of heavy meditation to achieve that kind of mental capacity. The unfortunate part is that it is only my reality that changes, others are not able to visualize it, unless they too have gone through the same process. But it still may vary as your reality is different from mine, 2 separate minds, 2 separate realities.

We can alter our perception of reality from within our minds but nothing more.

You obviously do not understand the nature of brute reality, yet you are typing this question in a language, a normal understanding, that presupposes reality. Look at your sentence and think again.

I don't believe so, but I think that is consistent with the psichology of many people I know ... those who think "the world revolves around me", you know :)
