You can also download and use a disk called UBCD from ulitimatebootcd.com and it has a offline NTFS editor that will allow you to unlock and reset the admin password back to blank. Make sure you follow the prompts as exactly stated. Most of the options are just hit enter. Read each question though.

EDIT adding what the next person stated. I know that in an older version it was infact called the Offline NTFS and registry editor. It is a linux based floppy. It may be labeled differantley in the newer versions and I no longer have a need for that tool.

Some corrections from your other answers.

1/ Win2K does ask for password in safe mode. You are thinking XP-Home.
2/ No need to format
3/ Dont know of google password reset tool.
4/ UBCD is the way to go, but its not called the NTFS editor. Its the password reset tool (may be in the NTFS tools section). Run the tool and blank out the password for the administrator account, then set it once you are in windows again.

Be extreeeeeeeeemely careful using this tool. Read the HOWTO first...!!!
