The answer is most certainly a matter of opinion. I have heard some people say The Beatles, Elvis Presley. Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra - all for different reasons.

I even read an article that claimed Bob Marley was the most influential musician ever (I happen to disagree...)

Listen to them all and decide for yourself.

White Christmas by Bing Crosby is the biggest selling single of all time. It could be argued that Jimi Hendrix was the best guitarist of all time - check out the song Little Wing. The Beatles have more top 10 hits than anyone else and Paul McCartney is still considered the richest man in show business... Elvis holds the record for the most Gold Albums ever, and he (even in death) earns more money in album sales than everyone else, every year!

Give My Way, by Sinatra a chance...

My favorite of all time, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, on the Wizard of Oz soundtrack. Judy Garland is timeless!

Crazyotto...'s answer is 100% true. You are asking about most popular artist of all time. The Name of Mozart is absolutely known in all parts of the world, but it does not means that everybody can recognize his music properly. Popular and well known should have different meaning. So if about popular artists: Of course american and english speaking (sunging) artists are usually much more popular. They have contributed more than anybody else in the development of music. From this point of view my answer would be: The Beatles, Bee Gees, Sinatra, ABBA, Jimmy Hendrix, Michael Jackson, Ray Charles, Madonna, Pink Floyd, Tina Turner, Elton John.
