Seattle's official nickname is the Emerald City, the result of a contest by a civic-minded association in the early 1980s to designate a pleasant nickname for the city [4]; the name alludes to the lush evergreen trees in the surrounding area. It is also referred to informally as the Rainy City (also Rain City), the Gateway to Alaska, Queen City, and Jet City, due to the local influence of Boeing.

Yes, Atomic is right. Seattle was nicknamed "The Jet City" because they build jets there, and once upon a time that was unusual, and very, very cool. So cool that they named the baseball team the Pilots, and the basketball team the "Supersonics", as in Super Sonic Aircraft (flying faster than the speed of sound.
The baseball team didn't stay, but we got a new one, and the powers that be decided that we needed a nickname that DIDN'T relate only to Boeing and air transport. There was a newspaper contest and Emerald City won.
A lot of old time locals think this is dorky.
