Abdominal tightening and period-like cramping in the abs or back. But, don't get real labor confused with Braxton-Hicks contractions. If you think you're going into labor, lay down for a while and see if the contractions stop. Braxton-Hicks contractions have to rhythm so if you're able to consistently time the contractions and space between, call your doctor. They usually won't admit you to the hospital until you're dialated to 3cm, but let your doctor know. They may want to see you depending on any difficulties during your pregnancy. Best of luck!

Ok I was the same way, I went to the hospital like 5 x's before I ever went into labor. ( I went the same day and they said I was not in labor it was too early and hours later I gave birth to a 5 week preemie baby girl) I knew for sure when I had contractions( very bad pains) less than 5 min apart. Ok they are so bad they cause you to have to move or clinch your fists to get through them.. Trust me you will be able to tell.

trust me.
You will know.
It feels like your stomach muscles are tightening without your mind telling them to, and you have to urge to push down, like when youre pooping.
And usually its quite uncomfy, and even painful.
When a REAL contraction happens you will know. It hurts like hell, and leave your muscles feeling worn.
These are different from the stretchy pully, pinchy burning pain of stretching tendons and round tendons. Those are sharp pains that take your breath away, and happen in the middle and end of your pregnancy as the uterus pulls away and down from the body.

I bet everyone is going to say the same thing..."you'll know!"
Your stomach will get real tight for a bit and then loosen again. It is hard to equate these feelings with other things, like most of the birth experience! Good luck!

Depending on how your body reacts, you can have a strange cramping in your stomach, lower abdomin, back or even your rectum (yes, that's where mine were!). It's different from anything you've felt before. I got really ticked when I'd ask and people would say, "oh you'll know" and I did. Once they started really going.
