It depends on where you live. In some states they have what are called "open" primaries where anyone can vote in any primary regardless of the affiliation they chose when they registered.

In some states if you are registered an an independent or undeclared voter you can choose which primary to vote in at the polls.

In NH I believe the majority of voters are registered as independents which drives political planners nuts and makes pollsters boatloads of cash each primary season.

That depends on your state. If it is an "open primary" state, anyone can vote in the democratic or republican primaries.

If it is a "close primary" state, you must be registered as a member of that party to vote. I live in Oklahoma which is one of these states. A lot of people here are more independent in their thinking, but register as one of the major parties just to vote in primaries.

It depends on your state law. Some states have closed primaries, where only previously registered members of the party may vote in that parties primary. Some are open, and allow voters to vote in either party, regardless of prior registration or history (as long as they are registered to vote). Washington State used to be "wide-open" where you could switch parties down the ballot, eg. vote for in the Republican race for governor, the Democrat race for Attorney General, etc., but I think they changed that. Not sure if any state uses it.

To get the answer for your state, contact your local voter registrar (usually the county clerk).

No party registration in WA state. They send us all ballots in the primary (Republican, Democrat, and Non Partisan) then you pick one to vote on and send it back.

You cannot vote in the primaries of the party you do not belong to.
