Yes it is very important because this is pretty much your computers "brain" without it you wouldn't even be able to turn it on. It is also important because this is where your computer has every cookie, website, and program, and everything else stored if you don't clean it out and scan for viruses at least maybe 2-3 times a week things can get into the registry without you knowing it unless you have a Macintosh so I would also recommend you also buy a registry cleaner cd at Wal-Mart or somewhere like that for maybe $20.00 or more depending on what you want to do with the cd. I hope this helps you and your computer. Funny we clean out ears but not out brains but we clean a computer and the registry because we have to unless you wanna buy a computer every year or so.

It is important. As you install/uninstall a number of applications, the registry tends to become cluttered after a while. Why? - because often when uninstalling applications, the info will be left behind in the registry (there are a number of reasons for this - sometimes by intent, sometimes due to poor programming). The more cluttered the registry, the less efficiently your PC will run and the more prone to crashes due to conflicts in information.

Now as advised, do not attempt this blindly. If you have never edited the registry before, do your homework and get hold of a DECENT registry cleaner and do as much homework as possible before getting started. If you do it right, you'll notice a major difference in the way your PC handles... stuff it up however and you'll be re-installing Windows! Do not choose a tool which does all the decision-making on what to remove - if it doesn't provide CLEAR information on what it is wanting to remove & does not give you the ability to make the final decisions, DON'T use it.

Being able to edit the registry directly via the in-built "regedit" tool can be a powerful skill-base to have - there are a number of registry tweaks I use on EVERY fresh Windows instillation (both to enhance performance from the start, and to remove those rotten shortcut arrows from all the shortcut icons), but I know myself the amount of research I did before-hand. It's not something to do blindly

You should be very careful when using Registry cleaning programs. These programs are programmed to recognize Registry entries. Any Registry entry that is not in the program can be deleted and then cause problems with your computer. This could mean have to reformat to repair any damage done by the cleaning program.

Windows XP has many built in programs (not available in earlier versions of Windows OS's) to clean your computer and keep it functioning properly.

Yes. Over time it will fill up with left over junk form all programs that you deleted, settings you changed, etc. The more junk, the slower the PC. Plus it can cause the registry to get corrupted and the whole PC to stop working. Ccleaner is an excellant (free) programs for cleaning the registry and other things on your computer.

If you use only few application which are common and standard and if you do not play with multiple installation and uninstallation it is not necessary at all to play with Registry. I have seen 100s of users who even dont know what is registry.

Do rate answer if you find informative :-)

It is IMPORTANT to NOT fool around with your registery even when you are a computer expert...ergo the need for System Resore.

Registry modifications are NOT recommended. If you have a problem, there are multiple other work-arounds to manage any difficulties.

So, the old saying applies here exactly:
"If it ain't broke, then don't fix it!!!"

Yes, this is what I use. http://ccleaner.com
CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware
