Back in the 60's and 70's there were only a few of us bike riders. When you saw another rider, you'd give him the solidarity wave (that's the fist in the air) showing you'd be there for him. As such you'd expect him to be there for you as well.

It's not a rule but assurance that if you're stranded on the side of the road, I'd pull over to give you a hand, no questions asked.

Sometime since the 80's it changed from a fist to a wave. Since bikes are much more reliable and people have cell phones, the likelyhood of someone actually needing a hand is very slim. I still pull over for bikers on the side of the road unless I can see for sure they're ok (like a cell phone or if he waves me off).

As to waving, most real bikers will wave to anyone. The newer crop of "bikers" who are accountants, doctors, or computer folk haven't been around bikes long enough to really understand that it's us against all the cagers and not HD riders against everyone.

I ride a Harley cruiser and I wave regardless of what brand or type of bike the other guy is riding. Usually I get a wave back. When I don't, there's no rule as to the type of bike being ridden. Those who don't wave back are generally the crotch rocket guys but I have been snubbed by cruiser riders as well. The wave is about acknowledging a common love of two wheels and an engine. Those who don't wave or only wave to a like brand have missed the essence of riding or are the r.u.b. who's riding because they need something to do to show off. There is no rule about waving. If you really understand what motorcycling is about you'd know there is no "beef". The "beef" you're witnessing are riders on the fringe who just don't get what its all about.

I ride a big ol' fat fendered Suzuki cruiser and I wave at everybody. If somebody doesn't wave back I shrug it off. Their loss as I see it because bikers share a camaraderie that the general population never will. It draws us closer. The notion that I shouldn't wave because of the make of bike the other guy/girl rides is just ludicrous. Of course there are some hard core riders that feel their machine is the only bike out there but that is their choice to feel that way. And also their loss. Actually I feel kind of sorry for small minded people like that. The world is such a tiny place for them. Pity.

Why do people assume there is an unwritten rule because they witness a few people do something? I ride a cruiser and wave at everyone, regardless of style or brand. It is a universal love of being on two wheels, and all who share that are noticed when I ride. Wave or don't your call, but I do.

There is no Beef.
And the person who didn't wave this morning might tomorrow. There's just no telling anymore. I'll return a wave, if I see it, and I can. Sometimes, but not always, I'll initiate one. There are many factors. I'm not going to let go of my clutch in the middle of a shift just 'cause somebody waved. I'll be nice, but I'm not gonna crash doing it.

I ride a Cruiser and wave at everyone, crotch rockets, cruisers, wingers and even scooters. There's no rule, just wave if you feel like it. Share the Love!

Cruisers ARE highway motorcycles. Did you mean the Yellow ones or the Fusia ones? A highway motorcycle is any motorcycle designed to ridden on the line, no longer a airborne dirt and dirt motorcycle, even Gold Wings are highway motorcycles.

No special rule, just cameraderie. If I can wave, I'll wave. If I can't, I'll nod my head, and I don't care what they're riding.
