He is serving 5 years in a Level 2 prison. We have been corresponding and we used to see one another. He is a troubled person that went down the wrong path, I feel that the right thing to do is to be his friend, nothing more, and offer him someone to talk to (via letters only). I know that he is a criminal and I am very informed about his crimes, but I also know that he needs someone to care. I do and always have cared about him as a friend. Am I doing the right thing? I don't want a relationship and I am not willing to send him money or photographs or grant him costly phone calls. I just want him to not give up hope and know that he has someone who cares about him and someone who will honestly encourage him. Please tell me what you think.

I had a "pen-pal" type relationship for a few years and although I believe that it had some wonderful moments and good parts, I do believe that in the long run, it was unhealthy for me. I got very close to this person and steadily we developed a co-dependent relationship that started to sour. Given that I have been through it, I would advise against it, though I know that it is tempting to only see the bright side of that situation.
