Can someone enlighten me as to what a land party is?

It's not Land, it's LAN... Local Area Network.
It is usually where a group of people get together with their computers and connect them all together via a network and play games.

It is a series of computer connected in a room or couple rooms thru a switch so there is no lag from playing across the internet.
Without the variable lag from different connections, it levels the playing field for all those playing. It also makes cheating very hard since there are normally people chosen to walk the ranks to make sure no one has something on their screen that shouldn't be.
