I am 10 weeks pregnant and tested positive for group B strep that has caused a UTI. I have been put on penicillin to get rid of the UTI. I know they test you later on in pregnancy for this, but has anybody else been diagnosed with this early in their pregnancy?
It is scary when you read about this bacteria and what it can do to the baby. Thanks for personal experiences.

yes I was diagnosed with it after I gave birth ( iwas 5 weeks early) they treated me while I was in labor just in case and glad they did cause I had it. I would not worry it is kinda common. The thing to worry about is if they contract it while giving birth. but if you have it later on in preg. they will treat it. They say that it is common through out pregnancy.

Sorry, no experience! All I know is that they told me when they tested me at about 8 months that if I did test positive, I would be put on meds and have a test every two weeks. If it was still present at time for delivery, I would not beable to deliver vaginally because of the risks to the baby. But I was negative, sorry! I wish I could help more. I would guess the routine would be about the same, you have some meds and they would keep checking you out. You have a long time though, so hopefully it will clear up. Good Luck!

It doesnt effect the baby until the baby comes into contact with it at birth. Thats why they test you for it before you go into labor and automatically give you and baby antibiotics.

They'll test you again come your late third trimester, and you'll probably get a shot or drip of antibiotics when labor starts.

Its a culture that some people grow on their skins naturally, much like how some people carry some form of herpes (cold sores, warts or ever the std). It doesnt pass to the baby until it has contact with your skin. The antibiotic stops the spread of B strep at the time of birth. :)

Some times they baby can get pnuemonia when born to a mother who isnt treated for B strep. But not always. Think of all the babies born before they found out about it. Its only been common practice since the 80's. many people had babies before then, happy healthy babies.
