I try and say hi because I am not a fan of the uncomfortable silance and that everyone just tends to stare at the wall!!

Sometimes. It depends on how ones day is going (they or I might talk about how long the day seems to be dragging on), where you are on the elevator (doctors office;sometimes you talk about why you are each there) or if they start a chat with me about something each of us is wearing or carrying (it starts with a compliment).

Yes, and I enjoy walking into elevators and stay facing the same direction that I walked in at. That in itself makes for interesting conversation, and looks!

Not really unless I have my son with me and they have a child. Then I always manage to strike up conversation. Other than that, I just stare at the Floor numbers.
