The others above are right, but there is another reason--the Statue of Liberty was also called The New Colossus. The Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (yes, seven again), was supposed to have also worn a crown similar to the one she wears. Unfortunately, we can't be sure, because it was toppled by an earthquake in antiquity, and there are no pictures of it.
