Hi, the reason for this dilemma, that of a few groups, mostly composed
of non-white groups, hating Irish Americans so much, is due to the fact
that Irish Americans are sort of like a caricature for the general
white population in America. This population, well represented by
the Irish, is hearty, very intelligent, sometimes bit pompous,
classically devoted to hard work, and sometimes a bit on the
stubborn side. This kind of attitude, which promotes hard work and
makes few excuses for laziness or such, is seen as a threat by
some minority groups in America and is therefore labelled as
being racist. If some minority members want to challenge this
sort of pompous attitude which a few Irish may show, they need
to demonstrate their own hard work, intelligence and genuine
devotion to life's best causes, some of those being honest work
of all kinds, friends, family, labor at one's tasks which is sincere,
and any other pursuits they truly feel passionate about!
The mistake which I personally believe that some minority groups
occasionally make, whether in political circles or crime circles,
is that they instead choose to ventilate their anger at those white
people, and sometimes those not necessarily white but well off,
who are trying to succeed in life. Instead of wasting their time
being angry about things, they should try hard to succeed.
While I am sympathetic to the fact that many minority members,
including some blacks and latinos, have been subjected to
the pompous attitudes of some spoiled rich white folks, and I
do appreciate their anger about that, I still will say, the crime
caused by minority groups far outweighs the amount of
snobbery with which they sometimes have to deal. Crime and
gangs are a terrible problem here in the Los Angeles area,
and I fail to see why so many young latinos, for example,
waste their time and their young lives with gangs and with
the violence they incur on themselves and on everyone else.
It is no wonder that, in doing so, they therefore, to a degree,
bring upon themselves further alienation from some members
of the caucasian community, who then shy from moving into
their neighborhoods and sending their kids to their area schools.
But the damage to the minority community, and to the hardworking
latinos,of which there are many, is just incalculable, because by
creating more alienation, they effectively shut out the higher income
property owners who could bring greater profit and value to their
beseiged communities!!!!! I see this firsthand daily, living in an area
which is upper middle class but also simultaneously close to
the East Los Angeles area. No one wants to move there if
they can afford to live elsewhere, and in nearby San Marino,
which is predominantly white and Asian, a gang member, or
even someone who likes like one, is basically an alien from
an evil planet. While I appreciate that many minority members
feel very resentful, ostracized and angered about the wealth
around them which they feel separated from, it is also a reality
that their criminal element further isolates them. I do think that,
to be fair to our minority community members, many of the well
to do should be better educated about the state of things in
their neighboring communities and should have a greater willingness
to help out those who are disadvantaged. I personally have friends
from every economic/social level and do not consider myself to
be isolated from the minority community. I try to help out anyone
that I can, and do not live in a fishbowl. But concern and empathy
from me and many like me in my area and in San Marino, South
Pasadena and Pasadena, and even our well-intentioned money,
is not enough. The atttiudes of minority members who commit
crimes and reject work and education must change. They must
resolve to do better, in spite of hardship, if they want better
lives. I hope that with time, the gangs will diminish as the years
go by, and that they will replaced with an emphasis on education,
preventative measures, etc. As a mother of a young child I find
myself very impatient with the gangs in neighboring East L.A.
and also with the impact that latino gangs have on nearby
Alhambra, California. They waste their lives and everyone's
time and energy and drive down property values to untold low
levels with their angry agendas. I am also aware that some of
them harass some of our Chinese citizens, which is another
very awful behavior on their part. I personally know of oneyoung
Chinese mom harassed (simply because she is a small-built,
Chinese female) by teen latinos at a nearby park, for no reason
at all, except that this is their trademark behavior. So, as a
result of this, they incur the wrath of those from both the
Caucasian and the Asian communiities, and then they wonder
why people act in a "racist" way. That is my point, that if they
want to make things better, they have to show a new and
different motivation. Way over fifty percent of our jail cells in
L.A. are crowded with minorities and gang members. It may
not be politically correct to point that out, but let me tell you,
it is true. So I hope that any young minority person reading this
who is considering a life of crime, whether here in L.A. or
elsewhere, will think again. It is a one-way ticket to nowhere,
and the thing to do is run as far as you can from trouble!!
I welcome anyone's thoughts and opinions--however, no swear
words or hate mail please. I wish the best for all and plan to
donate my charity dollars to many minority youth causes this
Christmas.
Most Sincerely,
Lisa in Pasadena area, lisashetler@yahoo.com

The British don't hate immigrants. Most people in the UK have 'foreign' ancestry, I, myself, have Irish ancestry. People are just getting annoyed because we're being forced into the European Union without being asked if we want to be part of a European Federation. The EU allows 'its' citizens to travel freely throughout the Union so, obviously, everyone comes to the UK which is putting a strain on our resources, the DSS and the Health Service. It also seems like immigrants get special treatment with regard to housing, they get a flat or house and there's a law which says that it has to be fully furnished. I have seen the paperwork for the tenancy legislation and it even mentions cutlery! Indians came over to the UK in the 1950's to do the jobs we didn't want and they have made a substantial contribution to the 'British' culture and to the economy, and they continue to do so.
