All jerks and woman-haters out there making women's lives misery right now, read this. PS, I am both black and female, and the title's OK with me, so keep your outrage.
Woman is the ****** of the world
Yes she is, think about it
Think about it, do something about it
We make her paint her face and dance
If she won’t be slave we say she don’t love us
If she’s real we say she’s trying to be a man
While putting her down we pretend that she is above us
CHORUS
If you don’t belive me take a look to the one you’re with
Woman is the slaves of the slaves
Ah yeah better scream about it
Make her bear and raise our children
Then leave her flat for being a fat old mother
We tell her home's the only place she should be
Then complain she’s too unworldly to be our friend
We insult her everyday on TV
And wonder why she has no guts or confidence
When she’s young we kill her will to be free
While telling her not to be so smart we put her down for being so dumb
ANY QUESTIONS?

The song was written in the 1970's, not the 1960's, Topher. And women are definitely still treated this way. One final thing: when you men say you love women, please insert the words "am fascinated by, cannot stop staring at, and lust after" in place of love. I do not believe men have ever loved women. You're incapable of it. You don't even love yourselves; how then could you love what gives birth to you - i.e., the hole you all try desperately to get back into until the day you die? I have never seen a man truly love a woman. I've seen them "do for" her and call it love. I've seen them use her as a doll for their self-loathing, deny their own wants (i.e. practice a strained monogamy) and say it's for her, and call that love. I've seen you guys obsessed with us, photograph us, stare at us and think constantly about us and call it love.
It ISN'T love.
We're too fat, too thin, too smart, too dumb, too, too, too.
Yes, Lennon is dead; but his words live on. 1 man got it.

Shania, not a fan enough, apparently: the song is called "Woman Is The N-----r of The World". Look it up. Lennon wrote it. And to the know it all who judged me and said "Unfortunate, though, that you choose to blame men instead of maybe looking inward for the cause", yeah, sure. As a little girl I caused my father to rape me. And the other guy who raped me, I caused that, too. And then when I reached out to male friends to console me, to protect me from the rapist, and they laughed and then spread away from me like I had a disease and never talked to me again, sure, you're right - I caused that, too.
Maybe you need to look into yourself. Men are hateful beings. Anything that rapes and destroys should be raped and destroyed itself. Thanks for your answers.

Heather, you are right. Women ARE treated poorly.
You would think that since a forum for something called "Women's Studies" exists it would make people think - why is this necessary? And feminism? Oh yeah...that's right. It's a male dominated world and we live in a patriarchal society. What does that mean? It means that women do not have a voice because they are not men and therefore not credible.
To the people who said that women are not treated like that anymore. I can't be anymore polite or tactful than this: YOU. ARE. WRONG.
If you, as a man, have the confidence to say that women are no longer treated poorly - how do you know? Can you pass as a woman and walk on the streets, go shopping, be treated as a woman? You are a man know the experience of a man. As a man, you embody masculinity which allows you to not care, to walk away, to write off women as being the "weaker sex" and "overemotional" and as a b*tch or a c*nt. If a woman is crabby, it is because she MUST be pre-menstrual, not because she has maybe had a bad day. That is sexism. Look it up. Go google "male priviledge." You might be a nice guy, that but applies to you. What makes you think you would know or even begin to understand the life of a woman?
And if you, as a woman, have the confidence to say that the women who say that must have had an awful life for them to develop that attitude - how dare you. Do you live under the rock? Have you ever see anything on mainstreamed TV, in the movies, or in a magazine? Do you look, act, or feel anything like the women what represent you as a woman? Don't even get me started on the racism and heterosexism which is imbedded in the mass media, either. Shame. On. You. It is NOT just Heather's experience, it is your own, too. Don't ignore it. Embody it and educate yourself.
Finally, does it really matter if Lennon wrote it or not? A rose is still a rose by any other name - regardless of who wrote that, it speaks the truth. It is curious that the only people rejecting it as possible truth are men. Why is that? Defensiveness? If you have a problem with this, do something about it. Educate yourself. You have worlds of knowledge at your fingertips. Look it up. It's called "sexism."

By categorizing all men as women-haters and women-users, by saying NO men love women, you are guilty of the same crimes you despise; Predjudice and sexism and bigotry. Do many men treat women as you describe? Of course. They have done so throughout history. Do ALL men do so? Of course not. If you believe that, you have lost your good sense and your perspective.
Sexism, like racism, is wrong. But IF it IS wrong, it's wrong ALL THE TIME regardless of who the sexist or the racist is. If you think it's ok for SOME PEOPLE to be sexist or racist, then you're saying it's ok for everyone to be that way. Is that what you believe?

So sad.. but many men do treat women like this!
Doesn't mean you have to let it happen to you girls! Im intelligent and beautiful and caring. I am a business woman as well. I only go for guys who respect me and treat me as an equal. There are some decent men out there!

Yes John Lennon really understood the way the world treats women. To bad he had to die so young.

Women's right have come a long, long way since the 1960s. I hope you don't think the average female is still treated this way in modern america, because it just isn't true.
I think even Lennon is use a bit of hyperbole to get his point across in this song, hence the shock value of the title...
p.s. I LOOOOOOOOVE women :)

It is true that some times we are stereo-typed to be,do,act a certain way but I noticed that the first thing a man does when he gets in trouble is call mom, sis, wife,or girlfriend, yes we are super in our own ways but we need to build bridges with each other not walls and we need men to help us do both.

Woman - John Lennon
Woman I can hardly express
My mixed emotions at my thoughtlessness
After all I'm forever in your debt
And woman I will try to express
My inner feelings and thankfulness
For showing me the meaning of success
Ooh, well, well
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Ooh, well, well
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Woman I know you understand
The little child inside of the man
Please remember my life is in your hands
And woman hold me close to your heart
However distant don't keep us apart
After all it is written in the stars
Ooh, well, well
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Ooh, well, well
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Well
Woman please let me explain
I never meant to cause you sorrow or pain
So let me tell you again and again and again
I love you, yeah, yeah

I am so sorry that you were hurt, sweetie, but not all men are bad.
My man loves me just as I am--fat azz, saggy boobs, crabby as hell & looking for a fight, you name it. He lifts me up and supports my dreams and desires, he loves my family, he shares the chores, he is wonderful, and I love him dearly.
I also realize how RARE a man like him is!
As a Mother, I have raised my sons to be loving, patient, and caring men, too.
