It's called Thundersnow. I know it is weird! I am from Minnesota, and during our blizzard this morning, there was thunder and lightning! Very strange....but Thundersnow is particularly rare meteorological phenomenon that includes the typical behavior of a thunderstorm, but with snow instead of rain. There is this whole deal explaining how this happens at Wikipedia, and look under Thundersnow. It's really quite interesting!

This is truly astonishing and I have never in all my born days even heard of it let alone seen it, but the more I think about it the more possible it seems, I guess it could happen if you have a thunderstorm but the conditions are right for snow rather than the much more usual hail, although what exactly those conditions are I could not say. You are very lucky to see this! Wisconsin sounds good.

It takes strong vertical motions inside the storm to produce lightning.
It usually occurs in summer thunderstorms when the atmosphere is more
unstable. However, some snowstorms are strong enough to produce brief
upward motion strong enough to produce lightning and thunder. When it
thunders in a snowstorm be prepared for a period of very heavy snow!

snow is frozen rain and a thunderstorm can make it snow depending on where the front is
