you should be able to "mix and match" but the new memory can only run as fast as the old memory (when both are installed). If they're the same speed then who cares, but if you want your system to operate at the faster speed you can't have it coupled with anything slower.

As I understand it, they have to match. If you have a spare slot and you are adding new dimms, you can always TRY just adding. If your computer doesn't boot up, don't panic. Just turn it off and remove the dimm you just added. You should get matching dimms that add up to 512/516 MB sysram if that is what you want, then REPLACE the old dimms with the new ones.

Suggestion only: I'd keep the old dimms in case you run into someone who needs them, or you have a child who may end up with your old computer one day. :)

Yes, but turn off, unplug from mains and wait a minute or two, to be sure there is no power running through the computer, slot the new RAM stick in plug in turn on, if your computer can not find them the try switching them over, but most important unplug the mains every time.

If they are the same speed it doesn't matter. I got organization issues so i usually put the larger in first. If theres a problem with anything when you boot the pc will beep a few time's.

yes, that way you will have 772 memory, as long as the computer is not too old it will take any mixture of memory sizes (ram not slots) upto 1 gig

You can do that just make sure if your motherboard is dual channel or not, and if it is that you buy a 256mb chip that matches the old one and run them in dual channel.
