I'm looking for some information regaurding the cost differance between lp gas and electric pool heaters. Not as much the cost of the unit, but the opperating cost. Which would be more cost efficiant?

the company i work for sells gas, and does hvac work, including geothermal.

recently we changed out a gas pool heater with a Geo thermal pool heater. we also changed the hvac system in the lodge (it was a resort) to a geothermal system.

The end result....the electric bill went up $20 a month in the winter, down $100 a month in the summer, and the owner wasn't buying 250 gallons of propane a month in the winter.

we ended up saving the owner like $5000 a year on heating and cooling.

the total installation costs were just under $30 000. the system will pay for itself in six years or less and has a 10 year parts warranty, and a life expectancy of 25 years or more.

all that aside, to heat a pool, resistance electric heating will cost a fortune to operate, and LP gas will cost a smaller fortune. geothermal heating will cost a fortune to install, but will save a fortune in the long run.

hope this helps,

I'm betting that LP would be cheaper to operate. But, do you have a large LP tank on the home already? If not you will need one. I know electric heat pumps cost a lot more initially also.

The exact difference will be largely dependent upon region. However, LP gas is typically loads cheaper, and the heating mechanism is far more efficient; fire vs. electrical resistance.
