Roanoke isn't quite the halfway point - Wytheville, VA is the better halfway point. There are a lot of services and hotels in Wytheville - which is only 70 miles past Roanoke. If the 5 month old sleeps a lot - you can make it to Wytheville.

There is also Blacksburg and Christiansburg VA - about 30 miles away from Roanoke on I-81. All the towns have a couple of hotel options.

If you are looking for a place without as much comercialisim you could try Bethany Beach. It's about 10 minutes north of Ocean City, and it's a lot less crowded.
