I have Direcway and you will have to get an antenna as well as a receiver; That is the path that the signal has to take to get to your computer.

Now, this antenna and receiver are NOT the same as the ones for sattelite tv. They are separate. You can get Direcway (it's actually Hughes Net now) without DirecTV.

It is still expensive ($60/month) but worth it for me. I am in school fulltime on-line, so I need a good connection. I cannot get DSL where I live, because it is way in the country.

I had DSL when I lived in the city and if you have it available, I recommend it because it is cheaper and FASTER!

Yeah, I hated that they cannot use the same antenna and receiver, because I already had DirecTV. So now I have 2 antennas in my yard, side by side. The receiver for your computer is cool though, it is upright (kind of like a DVD player on its side) so it takes just a little room on your desk, plus it has all these blue lights on the front and looks all teched out.

The connection is good except during storms, just not quite as fast as DSL.

When I worked at a store customers were bringing back their converter boxes, they said that they didn't work all that well for them and thought their home's location may have had something to do with it. Seems like they want everyone to use cable or satellite these days. We use to have free-to-air channels but don't think it was 20 channels, less than 10 before I got cable TV 11 years ago and some of them didn't pick up so well where I lived.

To get internet there needs to be a way for information to come in and go out of your computer. Now you are using the phone lines, they are slow. In populated places you can get high speed internet cables that come right to your house. The satalite system i use has a dish and cost about 1200 dollars to set up and 50 dollars a month.
I am not sure how the speeds compare but you might look into mobile broadband cards. One place to start looking is

but im sure that other companies have their own deals as well.

hope that helps some,

Get DSL or cable connection from the available service providers in your area. Satellite is also an option, except it has a ~20 second latency (delay) time.
