QS9001 is Quality Standard 9001.

What it means is that they have implemented a quality management system. It does not necessarily mean they are ISO-certified, though. It just means that they at least have an established and documented method for everything they do.

The basic tenent is this:

Say what you do
Do what you say
Prove it

Say what you do means you have written procedures for all aspects of production. This means that if you work in a clean room the instructions will tell you to wear a dust mask, a bunny suit, a hair cap, gloves, and booties, that you are not allowed to smoke, and that all doors should remain closed and the air on positive-pressure.

Do what you say means that you follow the instructions as they are written.

Prove it means there is a paper trail following every item, every complaint, every order, etc. And that if there is a customer complaint, there is a record of the complaint, and an investigation into what caused the complaint, and a documented fix to the problem. Whether the fix is a mechanical adjustment, an isolation of the faulty material, retraining of a telephone operator, etc.

This also involves internal checks, called Internal Audits. This means that the sales team can walk into the R&D area and ask to see their work instructions, their reports, and ask questions about how they do what they do, adn if they do something in a manner that does not jive with the work instructions the audit report includes a Non-conformance report. The deparment that gets audited has to address all the non-comformances before the audit is closed.

There's more to QS, but this is enough for you to survive an interview. If I were you I would express interest in becoming an internal auditor. That will show them you want to know more about the QS.

It's a quality assurance program. Many companies have programs where they self-audit their processes to make sure that the procedures are understood, consistently followed, and documented. If they are good at this, they can get a certification proving they are.

I think it means Quality Standard 9001. In keeping with ISO 9000, a corporate quality standard that companies adhere too in all aspects of business, it is supposed to create quality in companies.
