Also, does anyone else own this and would it be appropriate for a 2 1/2 year old?

Try TOYS R US. As long as there wasn't any sharp pieces or anything else would hurt him.

EBay and Amazon.com cost ~40 to 50 dollars.

The one on Amazon.com says it is for ages three and up

I saw it on a Toys R Us Commercial. So yeah... that's the place. I don't kow if other places sell it, or not and I don't know the price.
