I've been emailing to a person and when it shows the list you've emailed to a face with a straight mouth and closed eyes appears next to the person's email name...What does this mean?

It means they are not currently signed in or online.

Its a link to their messenger status and whether they are online or not. I assume this is within Yahoo, which checks the status of the person you are mailing - greyed out and straight mouth (offline) smiley yellow face (online) etc..
It gives you the information of whether they are online to allow you to choose to mail them or if they are online, use yahoo messenger to IM (instant Message) them.
