Huh? Thought there was a fire in the book.
The beginning of the book when she is a child in the fishing village is condensed to about 30 seconds in the movie. So the whole sub-plot about how she is looking for a father figure to replace the rich guy in the fishing business disappears from the movie.
A lot of things are missing from the movie but I suppose they had to keep the time down.....no Once Upon A Time in America here.
I really like the book and have read it more than once. I like the actors in the movie but I think the movie would have been difficult to understand if you had not read the book.

The most notable element that I can remember that is missing is the fact that the movie does not explain the origin of Pumpkin's nickname. In the book, the author clearly explains how and why that name came about. Furthermore, the movie cuts short of the ending, failing to explain what happens to Sayuri and the Chairman and how they end up married and living in New York.

movies tend to add stuff or sometimes miss things. book, you can read and make up your scene on where it took place, and how, its more of your world then the director, also the books tend to give out more information than the movies do.
