You need to replenish the oils in the original skin. That means removing the felt and applying a hand lotion or tanning oil to the skin side of the rug. You should try to contact a fur dealer in your area to find out what the best products are to use.
The most important maintenance for a bear skin rug is regular dusting. The rug can be dusted with a vacuum attachment or they can be wiped off with a soft damp cloth, always moving in the direction of the grain of the hair. Never vacuum or wipe a trophy head going against the grain of the hair. The eyes and nostrils can be cleaned with a damp cloth also.
If bear skin rugs get too dirty they can be washed with soap and water. When washing them, take a bucket of mild soap powder or chips, and wash with a soft damp sponge. Always remember to wash with the grain of the animal's hair. The following day, when it is dry, the bear rugs should be brushed with a soft brush or comb, once again in the same direction as the grain of the hair. Don't saturate the trophy or soak the head or skin in water.

the one that will give you the correct answer to your question is the 'taxidermist. look for one in your area, they are the best to render those kind of decisions...after all, they are the ones who stuffed or mounted the animals.
