why are people using a sort of brooch today? for more read the full topic?

i was watching sky news when i realized that the people at this channel were using a sort of brooch some of them were using a double coloured:red and green and some of them were using a blue one and some of them were using both, what is that for ,why is it so?

I thought veterans day was an American day not British
