Radium. Anyway, pitchblende is a uranium ore, and according to wikipedia--
7 metric tons of pitchblende yields 1 gram of radium
Or maybe pure Francium, another element. It is so rare and reactive that it has never been extracted and investigated properly. All scientists know is of it's existence.
See: it has been estimated that there might be only from 340 to 550 grams [1] of francium in the earth's crust at any one time.
But it's probably got to be Astatine--it is the rarest element on earth, even more so than francium.
Oh well.

Supernova explosion is a rare event in our galaxy. It happens once a century or so on average. Hence, it may be the rarest in the world.
The last nearby supernova explosion occurred in 1680, It was thought to be just a normal star at the time, but it caused a discrepancy in the observer's star catalogue which historians finally resolved 300 years later, after the supernova remnant (Cassiopeia A) was discovered and its age estimated. Before 1680, the two most recent supernova explosions were observed by the great astronomers Tycho and Kepler in 1572 and 1604 respectively.

I suspect that what is "the rarest" would be separated into classifications... like the rarest diamond, rarest animal, rarest whatever. LOL but the famed literary figure, playwright, and accomplished conversationalist, Oscar Wylde once commented that the "rarest thing in the world" was to LIVE, since the overwhelming majority of people merely existed which was not at all the same thing.

Hi Richard! Perhaps I may have the answer to your question.I think the rarest thing in the world are actually leaving-things known as Albino person or animal. The albino person or animal were born without natural colouring matter in the skin and hair or fur, which is white and the eyes, which are pink in colour.
I have seen documentaries on television about albino monkey, tigers and just a few months back,I recalled I saw on our local television (Brunei) an albino girl of about 2 or 3 years of age .She is a Malay girl just like me but she was born different from her parents, her brothers and sisters.
Another rarest thing that I know of,is the world largest flower-Rafflesia which can be found in Sabah,East Malaysia.I too recalled two species of rarest animal shown on Animal Planet, was the Pelican dogs and the pigeons that can fly upside down.
Sorry, that's all I can think of.Hope it can be of help to you anyway.

This is a good question...You could answer this as a "physical" thing like animals or philosophical answers.....
here are some of my thoughts on the physical
-http://www.animalinfo.org/rarest.htm
-Gutenberg Bible of 1456
-Astatine is an element so rare that if you searched the entire planet you’d only find a lump the size of a sugar cube
-1 cent Magenta Stamp

i'd tell him true love, but then again, he's 7, so he'll probably be worried about cooties. Tell him that he's the rarest thing in the world, there's absolutely nothing and nobody exactly like him, and he is a one-of-a-kind boy. It's true, after all
