e-books can be published in addition to a hard copy.
try selling e-books before the hard copy is up.
Most people who like you e-book will buy the hard copy as well as people have the perception that book in made of paper!
sell ebook for slight less then the hard copy and you can more money from the same person for both copies, if the book is good!
Prelaunch advertising is not all bad.
If you say enter the name and a link occasionally in a chat or forum will also boost the publicity

Some publishers will give you an advance, but that just means that they give you the money ahead of time and you don't get paid when it gets published. It's an advance on royalties. And if the book doesn't do well, you may have to pay back part of the advance. It's safer to be patient.

You could try your local press and see if they will pay you to print sections in their paper.
