I agree completly, not to mention, their social, and welfare programs only hurt the poor in the long run.

I'm a liberal and I have never claimed to be a champion for the poor like the Protestant Christians and Catholics. You are generalizing. My own personal belief is that if I have a roof over my head and am healthy, then I owe. I help out whenever and wherever I can, without expecting anything in return.

I am not a Democrat. I am just an individual who is proud and grateful to live in the United States, so I try to help others who are not as fortunate. I am not ignorant, I don't whine, and I don't smoke crack. I am well-educated, well-read and well-informed, and I choose to give to others, and I am really tired of being insulted on here. If you don't agree with my view of life, then too bad. We all have to live in this country together. Because I'm not leaving.

Alex, there's more than one way to champion.

Certainly, handing out food in soup kitchens and homeless shelters is a good thing to do. But, the thing you need to recognize, is that liberals try to change the structure of the society that makes people poor and homeless. And in the real world, political/social change doesn't happen primarily on the end of a soup ladle. It happens in political arenas, and by creating public awareness of problems average citizens can take part in solving.

I'm not knocking people who work in soup kitchens and homeless shelters. They certainly do their part. However, those are stop-gap measures. A progressive society should be able to all but eliminate the need for such things. Liberals, whether you agree with their methods or not, work toward that day.

that statement is about as fair as "all Republicans are rich guys who don't want to pay taxes". not all Republicans are the philanthropists as you describe and not all Democrats desire government to create a larger social benefit system. most people are in the middle on most issues...a fair system that allows deserving people to survive...there are those who don't deserve welfare just as there are those that don't deserve a tax break because they are cheaters. You are right only to a degree...Democrats do want more help given to the poor through the government than the Republicans...but the Republicans have a more extremeview of capitalism than a lot of Democrats and would rather give the benefit of a doubt to business by letting them bypass environmental needs, less taxes and less workers rights...Democrats would rather give the benefit of the doubt to the less fortunate through food stamps and other programs, more workers rights, and protect the environment over business concerns. The difference isn't great as long as both sides keep a balance between the 2 camps...what you are professing is one party rule with no dissent

Gee, I hate to bust your bubble, but lots of Christians are Liberals. In fact, go to any homeless shelter or soup kitchen and ask the volunteers whether they're Liberal or Conservative. But first you'd best fasten your self-righteous seat belt.

My step-father is a minister and he travels to places that are extremely poor or have been devistated by natural disasters to help those in the area begin to rebuild or build their lives and try to make their surroundings more comfortable than before.

He does NOT reach into my wallet or others wallets to do this, he does it because he is a caring person and wants to help others.

Many Protestant and Catholics are extremely liberal.
Also, Democrats are trying to raise the minimum wage federally and I think they will pull it off. They support welfare much more than republicans. But neither party supports Free Health Care!

The only champions for the poor, are poor people themselves. Because at the end of the day, they are the ones struggling.

The true champions of the poor are the ones working in the shelters, collecting & distributing food/clothing/etc, working in soup kitchens, driving them & helping them apply for & receive social services, va benefits, etc. These are the true champions of the poor. And they remain nameless b/c they do not do it for the kudo's they do it from the heart.

What makes you think all Catholics and Protestants are conservative and/or Republican? Not that I agree with their policies, but liberals do generally support raising minimum wages and welfare programs.

But they are champions of the poor... theoretically.

Many conservatives give of their time and money to charities because they know what it is to be poor, and someone gave them a chance.

Government welfare will never bring anyone out of poverty.
