I see people wearing jeans with them - what about cargo pants? How about shirts - would you wear t-shirts with them? What colors are good to have for casual use? I'm thinking brown - but what do you think?

A lot of people wear the blazers with jeans, shirts, and boots. It is OK. Personally I prefer Camel color sports coat with white shirt or stripe shirt, and navy blue jeans. Check out some sport coats from Banana Republic. http://www.bananarepublic.com/browse/product.do?cid=14845&pid=422299
No T-shirt and cargo pants. It is not appropriate at all.

Jeans are fine, but I think cargo pants aren't. Cargo's are too sporty, and baggy. And no, you wouldn't normally wear them with a tee. Try a polo or turtleneck instead.
For the jacket itself, brown is a great choice in color. Also try tan, navy, black, gray, or even olive. It depends on what colors look best on you, and what colors your shirt(s) are that you plan to wear with it.

What color are you referring to? coats or shirts? any color will do, but for coats I prefer dark brown and beige or white.
