On your previous question (about when the industrial revolution began) someone gave you a link to a wikipedia article about it. I suggest you read up for yourself.

However, industry grew much faster in the northeast than it did in the south. In the southern states, agriculture (especially cotton and tobacco) was the primary means of earning money, and for cotton plantations you need a lot of space and a lot of field workers. The southern way of life at the time wasn't geared towards building factories. In the north, though, where the cities were crowded, factories provided jobs, so industries had a chance to grow.
