My brake light stays on when I turn on my car... no the emergency brake is not on. The light just wont turn off. I don't know why. Anyone know why and how I can get it to turn off?

It is the break light on my dashboard. I basically wanted to know what could cause this to happen so that when I take it into the shop I won't get taken advantage of by the mechanic.

Yeah, what they said, or it could be a fuse.

Your question isn't exactly clear what light is on. Is is the warning light on your dashboard or the actual lights on the back of the car? I'm assuming you mean that dashboard light. This is likely a sign that your pads are worn and need to be replaced, or the sensor has come loose and needs to be replaced, or some other problem with the braking system. You should check your owner's manual to see what it means. If it says you need new pads, then don't wait to get them, becasue you could end up damaging your rotors and it will cost 3-4 times as much for the repair.

If it is the lights on the back of your car, it could be the bulbs (although it not common for them both to go at the same time). Many bulbs have two elements, and when one burns out, the other stays bright all the time. Otherwise, it could be your stoplamp switch (usually located under your brake pedal) which is a fairly inexpensive fix. Good luck.

That light is telling you that there is a problem detected in your brake system. If you don't know much about cars, take it to a brake place. There they'd should be able to tell you what is exactly wrong with it. Some possible causes, No brake fluid in the reservior, possible leak in the rear brakes, if they are drum brakes. Good luck.

well if your headlights are on then so will your brake lights. that's goes the same if you have day time running lights. other than that if its just the brake lights is your brake pedal stuck at all just enough so it turns the lights on? I'm not really sure other than that.

Check the level of your brake fluid.
If it's low, top it off and see if that works. Of course this could mean you have a fluid leak somewhere.
Good luck
