I think George Allen's concession with 7000or less votes separating them was a Class Act. However, I strongly believe Webb wouldn't have been so gracious. I think he would've wanted a recount.

There is no doubt, he would've wanted the recount. But you really could not blame him if he did. It is not like he was running for class president. A lot was riding on that vote. Allen did the "Bigger" thing...But I would not have thought ill of him if he would have requested the recount.

Jim Webb is a conservative (or at least a moderate), with a good military background. He will be one of the better Democrat senators, and is very unlikely to go along with the entire party line. The Democrats nominated him because it was their only chance to win in Virginia.
I have no reason to believe that Webb would have demanded a recount, but the Democrat party might have, and this is an acceptable thing to do..

The state of Virginia gives a candidate the right to a recount if the election came down to a one percent difference. Either person would've been within their rights to do so and then to graciously concede.

Neither of them would have conceded to the other if the outcome was unclear--way too much was at stake in that race. The recanvassing made it clear that Allen lost. Had there been any chance that he could have won he would have held on--to suggest otherwise is to say that he handed over control of the Senate to the Democrats to appear gracious.

allen's 'class act' was 'strongly suggested' by party leaders...unlike florida, virginia actually counts votes fairly accurately-there has never been an election in virginia where over 7000 extra votes were found...i'm glad that you have strong beliefs about what webb might or might not have done...but it's a shame that you don't have the slightest shred of anything factual to back up your contention...you have a bright future in republican politics

Damn right he would have demanded a recount. With all of these close elections, especially Montana, Virginia, Missouri, and a slew of others if the results were reversed the democrats would be screaming fraud. Accusing Diebold of rigging the election, accusing Republicans of voter intimidation, etc. etc. At least the Dem's are consistent on one thing... whining when they lose.
