My 1992 Buick Lesabre started stalling on me periodically the other day when idling. It starts up ok after stalling and the "check engine soon" light comes on every now and then. I checked the computer codes and I got code 34. At first thought it was my MAF, but now I am not sure. Yesterday as I was driving I used the power windows to roll up my window and the car absolutely went dead on me (no electic power at all). I know the battery connectors corrode quite quickly in this car, (I cleaned them about 2 weeks before) and after jiggling them I was able to restore power to the car and keep driving. Could my car's idling problems, stalling and code 34 be related to bad battery terminals? Also, at around the same time I realized that my car no longer pumps out any heat from the heater, (the fan works but no heat!). Could all this stuff be related to a bad battery connection, or do you think it is the MAF. (P.S I have cleaned the MAF but it didnt do anything).

Thanks

Well, since your code came up as code 34, I'd go ahead and get that Mass air sensor replaced. Yes, it can casue your engine to stall. The loss of battery power is probably due to poor connections of the terminals, even if you just cleaned them a couple weeks ago.

So, replace the Mass air sensor.

ok i read the three responses u got and none are correct for this problem. first let me say that u have a loose starter connection. u have a big battery cable that runs to the starter, there are also two to three other wires that contact that battery cable, they provide power for the whole car so if u turn the key either u have a bad ground which is unlikely or u have loose starter connections. check them. next the stalling is simple and common. CRANK SENSOR. when they start to go bad they can keep the vehicle from starting or they can just stall it just shut it down like u lost spark. u have either a 3.3L v6 or u have a 3.8L v6 its common for both. if u find that the car stalls, starts one more time and does not start again u have a bad cam sensor also common. hope this helps. and yes corroded battery cables can cause all kinds of funny problems so take care of them fast. i have seen corroded cables not only cause and idling problem but would not allow the radio or blower motor or even the head lights to work when everything else would. as for the no heat u have a plugged heater core either replace it or try flushing it i recommend replacing the heater core and flushing the rest of the coolant system.

If this started after some work, especially any work requiring the electrical harness to be disconnected, the harness was not reconnected properly. If it just started happening with no work having been done on the car, you have shorts in the harness and it will take some detective work to locate it. Somewhere the plastic coating on the wires has melted and allowed the wires to connect when they should not. You can disconnect the harness and test each line for a short (using a multimeter or continuity tester from places like Radio Shack), or rent or buy a car computer code reader, which might tell you where the problem is. You have to get it checked out, because the cause of the shorts may be continuing (overheated component or wire near the exhaust system, for example) and lead to the car dying on the road or even catching fire.

The battery connections are probably bad, but the MAF code, stalling and the heater not working right can all be caused by vacuum leaks.

very possible it's in the battery connections. strip off the rubber around the cable ends and be sure they are clean and tight. CODE 34- MAF sensor or curcuit fault.
