Metal shavings have to come from somewhere, right? Well those shavings indicate that something metal is wearing on something else metal, and you will eventually wear down to the point where it doesnt work. There are a whole bunch of gears in a transmission, and you get different speeds of the car by different combinations of gears. The car changes gears for you, and to do that there has to be something that sort of slows the gears down so that they can change combinations without grinding together. There are clutch plates the size of a very small dinner plate that slow the gears down, pull them away, and push new ones together. Those plates have worn down, much like brake pads do, and thats why you see the metal in the fluid. A mechanic can actually rebuild the transmission with new plates, but labor is so expensive now that its usually cheaper to replace. The good part about this is that you have some time ususally, because the car will still work with them worn. If you floor it, and the motor revs but the car doesn't go and shutters, then the transmission's almost completely worn out. Until that time, keep driving it.

How many miles on that car? It's odd for the tranny to go on an '02 Toyota but it's possible.
Are the metal scrapings in the transmission fluid (not the oil)?
Get a second opinion like others have said.

1st of all: Go to a different shop and have your check engine light diagnosed. Find out why the light is on! Then take your vehicle to a nationally recognized Transmission shop. Most like AAMCO or Mr Transmission will diagnose the transmission for FREE! At least if a shop like this repairs the transmission, you will have a Nationwide Warranty. I apologize for how Mechanics/Service Shops try to treat Ladies and Older drivers.

If it is shifting alright, thats what the Trans filter is for. There will be a few shavings. The best thing you can do with all cars. Is to buy a extra transmission cooler. Change fluid and filter every 30,000 miles,or use sync.A.T.F. and change every 75,000 miles.

Metal shavings in the transmission is the oldest scam there is. They point them out and tell you to give them large amounts of money to rebuild the transmission. If your transmission is working fine, stay away from that guy and don't worry. If it does have a problem try to find somebody honest for another opinion.

Any CEO of a car rental agency. When the base price for one week starts out at $192 and ends up at $298, it is time for some serious head thumping. To add insult to this, upgrades which would add another $100 are outrageous. All of these were offered along with the substitution of a car not the first choice. Add $6.99 per gallon for fuel costs. If I thought Washington state was expensive, So. Calif. tops it. Thanks for letting me rant.

metal in the fluid is not uncommon. go some where else, have fluid & filter changed.do this every 25,000 to 30,000 miles and you should have no problems. don't let them bs you. stay away from trans shops, your trans will ALWAYS be "going out".

Unfortunately, He maybe right. But I'd go to another place to get a second opinion. Don't take his advice on who to goto, as he might be trying to get you set up with a fellow rip off buddy of his. Good luck.
