Off the top of my head, I think catching and eating that woodchuck was a particularly guy thing to do. I suppose going out and living in the woods with very few amentities was considered a particularly masculine thing to do at the time.

I think this analysis will tell you more about what you consider to be masculine than anything about Henry David Thoreau. Masculinity is in the eye of the beholder after all. It is very culturally informed.
